Adoption FAQ’s
What are the adoption fees?
Cats $150 (base) Dogs $300 (base). The fees go to help cover medical expenses of the animals and to the programs we support. This also ensures that all our animals are healthy and well taken care of.
Where do the animals stay while they wait to be adopted?
At GHS we have a dedicated group of volunteer foster parents. These are volunteers that have chosen to donate their time and resources to provide a safe and nurturing environment for each foster animal until they find their forever home.
What are your adoption policies and procedures?
- You should be at least 21 years of age to apply
- Your current animals must be up to date on rabies vaccine and spayed or neutered. We may ask for proof from your current vet
- Proof of pet deposit if you rent
- We recommend that all our kittens have an animal companion in the home
- All dog adoptions have fencing requirements and always require a home visit
- All applicants are required to sign a binding adoption contract
- What supplies will I need for my new pet?
For cats we ask that you purchase the following basics:
- Clumping litter, litter scooper and litter box
- High quality dry and wet food
- Scratching posts, spread throughout your home or in the most visited rooms
- Cat tree (optional)
- Carrier
- A variety of toys, some that they can play with on their own and some that provide interaction with you and your cat

What do I do when I see an animal I would like to adopt?
If you’re at the center for a drop in visit and fall in love with an animal there, please fill out a paper application provided by the center. If you find a GHS animal through Petfinder.com, please submit an online application which you can find above. A volunteer will get back with you to schedule an appointment to ensure that the animal you’d like to visit with will be at the center for a meet and greet.
What should I do with my new animal as soon as I get home?
Please allow your pet time to adjust to their new surroundings. New sights, smells and sounds can be overwhelming to some animals, especially if they are older. If possible, find a quiet spot (maybe an office or spare bedroom) that can be used for several days to keep your new animal, litter box (if a cat), food/water and some toys. If you have other pets in the house, let them meet under a doorway for the first several days.
After several days, consider a meet and greet between pets, under supervision of course! Treats are always a great way to bring pets together. If that goes well, increase the length and occurrences of these meetings. Once you feel that everyone is getting comfortable with their surroundings, you can start letting your new pet explore more of your home. More information will be provided upon adoption.
